Mighty Ships - HDMS Absalon...
Thu, December 20, 2012 A 45 minute Discovery Channel documentary program from 2009 about the Royal Danish Navy's Command & Support ship HDMS Absalon and one of the early missions they did off the Somali coast - fighting piracy.
Today the number of pirate attacks have dropped a lot and agreements have been made with Kenya and the Seychelles in order to prosecute the pirates.
The Danish Navy has had to add a new flex-module (containerized systems) to their arsenal - a prison.
Both HDMS Absalon and its sister ship the HDMS Esbern Snare were the flag ships of the Danish navy at the time. However, today a new and more powerful fregat class (based on the Absalon class) has been built - the Iver Huitfeldt class (3 ships). The HDMS Iver Huitfeldt is currently on service off the Somali coast hunting pirates.
